Meeting minutes of April 16, 2008 Board Meeting were approved.
General Business
The brown van will likely be turned be donated to Father Joe’s organization. Tom did not receive a positive response in his initial conversation with the organization, but believes he may need to talk to different people. There is still a need to get a vehicle for the sisters in Tijuana. MC will place an ad in the bulletin regarding cargo vans at least 5 years old. Les Werling is still doing a good job of coordinating all the operations and maintenance issues for MC’s vehicles.
The Catholic Mutual insurance issue appears resolved. The box truck ownership will be transferred to St. James, and MC will retain all operations and maintenance responsibility for the vehicle. Motion carried to this effect.
Newsletter: The next Newsletter comes out in August and will include information on the food program, construction, and fundraising. It appears that MC did not succeed in sending out the last newsletter to the St. James parish mailing list.
Mission Circle has begun posting monthly meeting minutes that are slightly redacted by excluding the current bank account amounts.
There is additional work for the construction crews in National City for the Missionaries of Charity order that will likely last for a few months.
Casa Eudes: Hot water heater now supplying two rooms that were not heated previously. Other work on windows and doors is ongoing. There is a need for planning additional projects that could include a carport and a cover over laundry areas.
Young Neighbors in Action looking for additional work. Perhaps Pauline could utilize these resources on the 3rd Saturday program.
MC will need to formalize its Board structure at the request of Fr. Howard. Exact structure needs to be finalized, but there will be rotating Board members and formal voting procedures.
Mission Circle Sunday format needs finalizing. People agreed that more visual aids were needed during talks. There were also suggestions about who could possibly speak about the program (Alphonso, Sr. Lucie, etc.) that would make an additional impact.
New Initiatives
Motion passed to pay $2,000 towards the nutcracker. This contribution will come out of the 5% that MC owes the foundation each year from its annual budget.
Motion passed to approve the attached audit report of the food program prepared by Victor Tostado. We are currently delivering food to 10 different locations.
The tutoring semester is coming to a close and there were no updates on this program.
Nothing to report on the Senior Outreach program.
St. Therese of Carmel Valley: Don has been contacted by a parishioner there and MC does not need to meet with St. Therese until later in September. Jan has been putting a notice in St. Therese’ bulletin for the last 4 months regarding MC. Dale will contact St. Therese to see about the possibility of meeting before September.
Possible Epiphany strategies for next year include the following: (i) provide presents on U.S. side of border, while providing food in Mexico, (ii) take presents down gradually throughout year in order to avoid border issues. Everyone recognizes the merits of the wrapping party in bringing the parish community together.
VTC: Maggie talked to Maria about possible role in administering the VTC. Maria is interested in the position but was unwilling to suggest a salary/payment amount. It is perhaps possible to redo the lower level of the studio to make new classrooms, and it is also possible to use the classroom at Casa Eudes. Vreni and Maggie are making another trip down and taking computer consultant with them and will learn more.
Vreni spoke with Pat Villa, who is the St. James Youth Minister coordinator. The youth are interested in helping out with the Christmas Party at Casa Eudes.
Dale closed with a prayer.
Note: The June MC board meeting will be at 7:00 pm on June 18.
